AfriCultuReS will apply geospatial science to sustainable agricultural development, natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, and poverty alleviation in Africa. AfriCultuReS, supported by the GEO Secretariat, will involve all key players of AfriGEOSS, GEOGLAM, SIGMA, ARTEMIS, African Drought Observatory and other initiatives as well as partners representing the diversity of African agricultural systems, in an effort to push forward the services provided by current systems, with innovative fusion of data from multiple sources (EO, in-situ, citizen-based crowdsourcing, climate services and weather, crop models) in a vertical manner. Crop yield and biomass prediction models will be enhanced through the fusion of EO data and climate models, emphasizing the use of the complementary sensors of the EU Sentinels constellation. Geospatial products will be combined in a spatial Decision Support System (DSS) to enrich decision making and risk assessment. The geo component of the DSS will be compliant with the GEO\u2019s interoperability standards, allowing its integration with the current services of the GEOSS Common Infrastructure. The African partners and collaborating networks will be essential for local training and promoting further use of the project tools. This is also true for the operationalisation of adaptation goals which are defined in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs): How to translate adaptation goals into concrete actions? Hence, there is a need for science-based adaptation planning which requires sound climate risk analyses and assessment of potential adaptation strategies. To address this issue, the AGRICA project provides comprehensive climate risk analyses for the agricultural sector in selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The findings are meant to inform national and sub-national adaptation planning including NDC and NAP development and review processes but will also provide useful information and evidence to decision makers at other planning and implementation levels. AGRICA currently focuses on the development of two publication formats: in-depth climate risk analyses and shorter climate risk profiles. Climate risk analyses are detailed scientific reports accompanied by a summary for policy makers and a methods factsheet, while the climate risk profiles are short briefs including a methods factsheet. The climate risk analyses are intended to inform decision makers from governments, international institutions, civil society, academia and the private sector regarding the risks of climate change impacts and provide guidance in effective adaptation planning at national and sub-national level. Improving access to land-related data and information is our mission. This is what we do: Provide a platform for land data, publications, news, blogs, multimedia content and much more from an international network of organizations and institutions. Aggregating diverse and highly dispersed content helps to make hidden data available to everyone. Nurture the information ecosystem by linking land databases, bringing fragmented data collections together and enriching content with metadata that complies with Open Data standards and principles. Fostering a healthy and diverse ecosystem of land-related information helps to improve the potential impact of data and ensures information is easily searchable and discoverable. Stimulate debate among those working on land-related issues around the world through events, discussions and webinars. Online and offline dialogues help raise awareness of hidden issues (e.g. sexual extortion in the land sector) and provide opportunities for collaboration between diverse groups and organizations. Visualize and synthesize data from diverse sources into unique portfolios of contextualized and actionable land governance information. Our thematic and country portfolios provide free virtual repositories of bibliographic and multimedia resources, helping to reveal new trends and expose existing gaps in the information landscape. Support information providers from the land sector to utilize Open Data standards and encourage the creation and uptake of a standards-based data infrastructure based upon FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) principles. The increased adoption of commonly agreed data standards is helping information derived from local groups, national organizations and international institutions to coexist within the wider information ecosystem. Potato as one of main commodities grown mainly in the cooler and wetter highlands of Rwanda, its production could be facing the global warming. The purpose of this study is to carry out weather (temperature and rainfall) change dynamics in the potato growing zones of Rwanda over the last thirty years. Weather daily data from 1987 to 2016 were collected from three weather stations, at Kawangire for low elevation, at Gikongoro mid elevation, and at Kora high elevation, respectively. Farmers were interviewed to know their perceptions on weather conditions during past thirty years. Weather data were analyzed by ombrothermic diagram, Nickolson Index and graphing with generated trend equation methods. Interview data were analyzed with Chi-square test at P =.05. Results have shown as dry June, July and August months in low elevation; June, July and August in medium elevation and June and July in high elevation depending on decade. Rainfall was increasing in low and medium elevations, while it was decreasing in high elevation. Temperature was decreasing in low elevation area and it was increasing in medium and high elevation areas. All interviewed farmers confirmed long term-shift in temperature and precipitations. A total of 95%, 54% and 43% of farmers from respectively low, medium and high elevations reported that weather was becoming wetter during last years. As conclusion, potato growing cooler and wetter conditions of high elevation are shifting to low elevation in Rwanda. For climate change mitigation, Rwanda needs to promote potato in its Eastern part, the low elevation region, in order to increase the crop production in the future.", "formats": ["canonical"], "keywords": ["Agro-climatic characterization", "Rwanda", "climate change", "farmer perceptions", "potato production", "national", "climatic data", "Crop"], "providers": [{"name": "Anastase Nduwayezu", "organization": "RAB", "positionName": null, "roles": [{"name": "Plant Pathologist"}], "contactInfo": {"phone": {"work": null}, "email": {"work": "anastasenduwa@yahoo.fr"}, "address": {"work": {"deliveryPoint": null, "city": null, "administrativeArea": null, "postalCode": null, "country": "Rwanda"}}, "url": {"url": null, "protocol": null, "name": null, "description": null, "function": null}}}]}, "links": [{"href": "https://www.sdiarticle5.com/review-history/95325", "name": "Citation", "description": null, "type": null, "rel": null}, {"href": "https://git.wur.nl/isric/lsc-hubs/rwanda-hub/-/blob/rwanda/portals/RW/LSC/data/RW41.yml", "name": "Source of the record", "description": null, "type": "canonical", "rel": "canonical"}, {"rel": "self", "type": "application/geo+json", "title": "RW41", "name": "item", "description": "RW41", "href": "https://rwanda.lsc-hubs.org/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/RW41"}, {"rel": "collection", "type": "application/json", "title": "Collection", "name": "collection", "description": "Collection", "href": "https://rwanda.lsc-hubs.org/cat/collections/metadata:main"}]}, {"id": "RW87", "type": "Feature", "geometry": {"type": "Polygon", "coordinates": [[[29.02, -2.92], [29.02, -1.14], [30.82, -1.14], [30.82, -2.92], [29.02, -2.92]]]}, "time": "23 Jan 2023", "properties": {"themes": [{"scheme": "https://inspire.ec.europa.eu/metadata-codelist/SpatialScope", "concepts": []}, {"scheme": "https://lsc-hubs.org/tags/", "concepts": []}, {"scheme": "https://lsc-hubs.org/categories/", "concepts": []}], "updated": "2025-06-01", "type": "dataset", "created": "23 Jan 2023-01-01", "language": "en", "title": "Climate-related risk modeling of Banana Xanthomonas Wilt (BXW) disease incidence within cropland area of Rwanda", "description": "Banana Xanthomonas Wilt (BXW) is the major threat to banana in Rwanda, causing up to 100% yield loss. There are no biological or chemical control measures, and little is known about potential direction and magnitude of its spread, so cultural control efforts are reactive rather than proactive. In this study, we assessed BXW risk under current and projected climate, to guide early warning and control by applying maximum entropy (Maxent) model on 1,022 georeferenced BXW datapoints and 20 environmental variables. We evaluated the variables\u2019 significance and mapped potential risk under current and future climates to assess spatial dynamics of the disease distribution. BXW occurrence was reliably predicted (mean validation AUC ranging from 0.79 \u2013 0.85). Precipitation of the coldest quarter, average maximum monthly temperature, annual precipitation, and elevation were strongest predictors, explaining 21.1%, 13%, 12.6%, and 9.4% of the observed incidence variability, respectively, while mean temperature of the coldest quarter has the highest gain in isolation. Further, the most susceptible regions (in western, northern, and southern Rwanda) are characterized by elevation (1,350m \u2013 2,000m), annual precipitation (900mm - 1700mm), and average temperature (14oC - 20oC), among other variables, suggesting that a consistent, rainy, and warm climate is more favorable for BXW spread. Under future climate, the risk is predicted to increase and spread to other regions. We conclude that climate change will likely exacerbate BXW-related losses of banana land area and yield, under temperature and precipitation influence.
